Course Content
Introductory Mandarin familiarizes students with the language and culture of the Chinese in preparation for travel, work or studies related to China or related contexts. The course employs the use of simplified characters and Hanyu pinyin to develop competencies in listening, reading, speaking and writing in the target language.
The first of two courses provides instruction in the foundations for learning Mandarin, basic communicative functions and an understanding and appreciation of Chinese sensibilities through an exploration of traditional and cultural practices, urban legends and media. The course also allows students to recognize 120-150 Chinese characters and has students begin to write a number of characters.
